What is a Video Background Remover?
A video background remover separates the person in your footage from whatever is behind them, then blurs that background, swaps it for a solid colour, or drops in an image of your choice. It is the same effect video-call apps apply to a live camera feed, except here it is applied to a video file you already have, frame by frame, and saved as a new video you can download.
This one runs entirely inside your browser. The clip is never uploaded to a server, there is no account to create, and nothing is added to the finished file — no watermark, no time limit on the tool itself.
How to Use the Video Background Remover
- Choose your video. Drop in an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file with a person visible in the frame. It loads straight from your device.
- Pick a background. Blur the original, choose a solid colour such as a green screen, or upload your own image to sit behind the subject.
- Fine-tune the cut-out. Adjust edge softness so the outline blends naturally, and leave steady edges on to stop the outline shimmering between frames.
- Paint over any mistakes. Open Touch up mask and brush directly on the video: Remove paints an area out, Keep paints it back in. You can also switch the AI off entirely and paint the whole mask by hand, which works on clips with no people in them.
- Export the video. Press remove and export. The video plays through once while each frame is processed and recorded, so a two-minute clip takes about two minutes.
- Download the result. Save the finished MP4 with the original audio intact, ready for YouTube, a course platform or a social post.
Why Use This Video Background Remover?
Nothing gets uploaded
Your footage is read directly from disk and processed on your own machine, which matters for client work, interviews and anything confidential.
Clean up a messy room
Blur a cluttered kitchen or shared office behind you so viewers watch you rather than the washing-up.
Fake a green screen
No fabric, no lighting rig. Export on a flat green or blue background and key it in your editor exactly as you would real chroma footage.
Brand your videos
Drop a studio backdrop, a product shot or your own brand artwork behind the subject to keep every clip on-brand.
- Free with no watermark — the exported file carries nothing but your video.
- Audio is preserved — the original soundtrack is recorded alongside the new picture.
- Works offline after the first run — the small AI model is cached by your browser.
- No install — no desktop editor, no plugin, no sign-up form.
Video Background Remover FAQs
Can I remove the background from a video for free?
Yes. This video background remover is free to use with no account, no export limit and no watermark on the finished file. It runs on your own device rather than on a paid server, which is what keeps it free.
Does my video get uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read locally by your browser and every frame is processed on your machine. Nothing is sent to a server, so private footage stays private.
Can I get a video with a transparent background?
Not in a normal MP4 — the format has no usable transparency channel, and the browsers that can write transparent video produce files most editors and platforms reject. The practical answer is to export on a solid green or blue background and key it out in your video editor, which gives you the same result with a file that works everywhere.
Does it work on videos without people?
The AI model is trained to find people, so it handles talking heads, presenters, vlogs and webcam footage well, and a product on a table or a car in a street will not separate automatically. For those clips, open Touch up mask, switch off Start from the AI cut-out, and paint the area you want removed by hand.
Can I select an area myself instead of using the AI?
Yes. Touch up mask gives you a brush you paint straight onto the video. Remove forces an area out of the picture and Keep forces it back in, and whichever you painted most recently wins, so you can correct yourself freely. Use it on top of the AI cut-out to fix a stray chair or a bright lamp it keeps grabbing, or switch the AI off and paint the whole mask yourself.
One thing to know: a brush stroke stays in the same spot on screen for the whole clip. It does not follow a moving subject, so it suits fixed areas rather than anything that travels across the frame.
How long does it take to remove a video background?
Roughly the length of the video. Each frame is processed and recorded as the clip plays through once, so a one-minute video takes about a minute. Keep the tab open and visible while it runs, because browsers throttle background tabs.
Why do the edges look rough or flickery?
Fine detail such as loose hair is the hardest part for any automatic cut-out. Raise edge softness to blend the outline, and keep steady edges switched on so the mask is smoothed between frames instead of jumping. Even lighting on the subject and clear separation from the wall behind you both make a noticeable difference.
